SAINT FRANCIS CHAPEL
is located in scenic Balboa Park on the south side of the California Plaza, across the street from the main entrance of the Museum of Man. Designed by Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue as an example of Spanish Colonial church design, the Chapel was built to add a religious note to the Panama-California Exposition of 1915.

The interior decoration was executed by Goodhue and Carlton M. Winslow. The Chapel is a blend of stark mission simplicity with tile floor, ceiling of heavy beams, and bench seating with an elaborately decorated gold leaf altar. The altar includes elegant modeled figures of the Virgin and Child, flanked on the left by Saint Francis Xavier and on the right by San Diego de Alcalα.

The Saint Francis Chapel is one of San Diego's favorite choices for wedding ceremonies. The Chapel is non-denominational, welcoming ministers of all faiths to perform services in this dignified sanctuary.
