Director of Public Programs
The Museum of Man is currently seeking a Director of Public Programs to develop, implement, evaluate, and manage the Museum’s exhibits and educational and public programs for a variety of audiences, including students, teachers, families, and museum visitors. This position creates and manages programs and exhibits that both engage and educate the public. This position participates as a member of the senior management team and works closely with other departments to set educational and interpretative goals and fulfill the institution’s mission.
Experience, education, or skills required:
Required graduate degree in anthropology with an emphasis on education; graduate work in museum studies a plus. Necessary professional experience and skills include teaching in a museum environment; demonstrated leadership skills; development of educational/cultural programs for a wide variety of age groups from children through adults; development of web-based teaching tools; ability to work independently and with a variety of audiences; exhibit planning and design; public speaking.
Primary duties and responsibilities:
Collections Manager
The San Diego Museum of Man is seeking a collections manager. Experience as a conservation technician is preferred. The collections manager works under moderate supervision to manage, preserve, catalog and store the permanent collection. This position is also responsible for assessing conservation of the Museum’s collections. The primary responsibilities of the collections manager are to generate and implement comprehensive collection management procedures; assist in the development and administration of a prioritized collection conservation assessment and treatment plan to improve the physical condition of the Museum’s permanent collection; build mounts and storage containers for various material types, sizes and conditions; monitor objects for damage and/or deterioration, evaluating major repairs and make minor repairs to those objects; perform cyclical cleaning of objects located within storage; administer a regular schedule of maintenance, which incorporates standards of safety and conservation for collection storage; monitor environmental conditions within the collection storage spaces; plan, design and control the ultimate high-density, compact storage solutions for the Museum’s collection. The collections manager will be responsible for assisting with facilitating care and control of collections on site; initiating, developing and implementing collections policies; overseeing object movement, internal and external; developing departmental and special project/program budgets; contracting for outside services as needed, such as: conservation, rigging, packing, crating, shipping, photography, etc.
Experience, education, or
skills required:
Candidate will have strong organizational skills with an attention to detail; strong communication and interpersonal skills; demonstrated knowledge and skills in the management, care and conservation of anthropological collections; demonstrated skills in office computer programs including word processing, email and database management; demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, on time and on budget; demonstrated supervisory skills, including volunteer management; ability to maintain humor and good relations while working under pressure.
An undergraduate or graduate degree in museum studies, anthropology with an emphasis on collections management or extensive experience in collections management-oriented museum work is required; training as a conservation technician preferred; familiarity with all types of material culture; experience with collections management software; training in careful handling of collections. Maintaining awareness of current conservation techniques and standards.
Digital Registrar
This position is responsible for assisting with the ethical and effective handling of accession and registration matters, cataloging and processing of objects. The digital registrar maintains the collections management database and barcoding system. They are responsible for cataloging and maintaining objects, photographs and digital files of the collections in the collections department. The digital registrar administer and file hard-copy and digital gift receipts, accession review forms, accessions, numbering, cataloging and photography of objects. This position is responsible for designating proper storage for collection items and keeping location records for items in storage, on exhibit and on loan (in or out). Identifies objects for the public and responds to inquiries about artifacts and photo orders. The person in this position will stay up to date with industry standards in digitizing collections. They will assist in the creation and maintenance of the Museum’s file naming conventions and will work toward the implementation of a digital asset management system. Once implemented, the registrar will maintain that system.
Experience, education, or skills required:
A proven knowledge utilizing electronic hardware and software to maintain integrated collection databases and methods of making that information available to the public in a variety of ways; knowledge of cultural material documentation practices; familiarity with requirements for reproducing cultural materials.
An undergraduate or graduate degree in museum studies, anthropology with an emphasis on collections management or extensive experience in registrar-oriented museum work; familiarity with all types of material culture; detail oriented; experience with collections management software; training in careful handling of collections.
