Home School Scholar Program
Participate in the San Diego Museum of Man’s Home School Scholar Program. Museum galleries come alive with interactive programs taught by Museum educators and designed especially for home-school families.
The Home School Scholar starts in September and occurs monthly during the school year, covering a variety of topics. Sessions for each topic run from 10:00 a.m. to noon for children in grades K-12. Registration for the first four sessions (September to January) begins now; registration for the remaining sessions (February to May) will be accepted beginning December 4, 2007.
The cost per program is $12.00 per student ($10.00 for Museum members). One parent chaperone for children under the age of 14 is required to attend. One parent for children 14 and above is invited to attend for free. Additional parents will be charged $3.00 each (free for Museum members). Each class is limited to 35 participants. Classes which do not reach the minimum of 15 participants one week before the program will be cancelled. Reserve your spot today. Note: We discourage bringing younger siblings and babies in strollers. For information about becoming a Museum member, please click here.
Program Information
Tuesday, February 26, 2008 – Forensic Archaeology
Forget Indiana Jones—did you know that archaeologists work in teams to get the job done? Visit select museum exhibition to “dig up” basic archaeological principles and practices. Then, in a classroom laboratory setting, work your way through analyzing and interpreting artifacts and bones after examining, measuring, and recording the data.
Registration for this class begins December 4, 2007.
Tuesday, March 25, 2008 – Planet of the Primates
How have primates adapted to their environments? Moving from the very first primates 65 million years ago to all of the various monkeys, apes, prosimians, and people alive today, you can “monkey around” in Primate Hall in the Footsteps Through Time exhibit. Investigate what all primates have in common and what makes each primate species unique. Work with primate skull casts and create a primate buffet.
Registration for this class begins December 4, 2007.
Tuesday, April 22, 2008 – Magic of the Maya
Explore the ancient and contemporary lifeways of the Maya. Examine close up the Museum’s magnificent collection of Maya monuments and ceramics in our Maya: Heart of Sky, Heart of Earth exhibition, learn how to read Maya numbers and master some Maya math, touch textiles and tools, learn the importance of weaving in Maya society, and make a weaving of your own.
Registration for this class begins December 4, 2007.
Tuesday, May 27, 2008 – Egyptian Adventure II
Haven’t had enough of Egypt? Come visit Egypt again and learn about the city of El Amarna. Hear about the Pharaoh Akhenaten and how he briefly changed the religious and social structure of ancient Egypt during his reign. Visit Discover Egypt in the Children’s Discovery Center to learn how to barter in an Egyptian market, play the ancient game of senet, and design your own mummy coffin.
Registration for this class begins December 4, 2007.
Rescheduled!
Tuesday, June 10, 2008 – Follow the Footsteps Through Time
Travel on an interactive scientific journey through time. Touch replicas of ancient stone tools and discover how "Lucy"—a 3.5 million-year-old Australopithecus afarensis discovered by paleoanthropologist Donald Johanson in 1974—may have "fished" for termites. Set your eyes on cave art in a Cro-Magnon cave and travel through the Time Tunnel. Students will have a chance to view and handle hominid skull casts and learn how archaeologists study these amazing finds.
