Museum Activities for Visiting Classes

Education Resource Room
Teachers can borrow reference books as well as videos from
the Education Resource Room, located in the Administration
Building. Small view-boxes with artifacts, and examples of
traditional crafts, along with interpretive information, are
also available. Physical anthropology cases explore themes
such as mobility and joints, diet and teeth, and comparative
anatomy, using fossil casts, bones, photographs, and
artifacts. Items are available for a 2-week loan and a small
per-item fee is charged, with discounts for members. Call
the Education Department (619) 239-2001, extension 20 for
further information.
Museum Membership
Teachers are encouraged to join the Museum of Man with an
Individual ($35 per year) or Family ($50 per year)
Membership. Members receive a 10% discount in the Museum
Store, discounts on Summer Camp, discounts for check-out
kits, free admission to 12 O'Clock Scholar lectures, a
quarterly newsletter Discovery, and invitations to
gallery openings. Please call the Membership Department at
extension 11 for further information.
Egyptian Cartouche
Translate a name into hieroglyphics! Students may want
to visit the Egyptian Cartouche machine located immediately
outside the Ancient Egypt Gallery. The cost is $1.00
and the personalized Cartouche makes a fun souvenir of the
Museum visit.

Children's Discovery Center
This 900-square-foot permanent exhibit, adjoining the
Ancient Egypt Gallery, gives students hands-on
opportunities to have fun while learning about the lives of
18th Dynasty Egyptians.
• Learn about the contrasting lives
of a royal family and the family of a farmer.
• Dress like an Egyptian.
• Decorate the royal cat Bastet.
• Barter at the market with pretend food
and trade items.
• Learn how a mummy is made.
• Help decide the mummy's fate in the afterlife.
• Write a message to the mummy.
