The Tower After Hours:
Music & Dance of Ghana

Thursday, February 26, 2004

The evening of February 26 began with a blessing ceremony by native Ghanaian Fred Aryee, a member of the Ghanaian Association of San Diego. Museum visitors then enjoyed the high-energy Ghanaian music and dance performed by Akayaa Atule and Abaa Koma. Local musician Beston Barnett also demonstrated Ghanaian Highlife music, and explained the African and Western influences that resulted in the unique sound of this vibrant music. Another performance by Akayaa Atule and Abaa Koma followed. Akayaa’s passion and excitement were infectious, and before the end of the night, most attendees were up on their feet and practicing their newly learned Ghanaian dance moves.

This event would not have been possible without the effort of the Ghanaian Association of San Diego, who collaborated with the Museum of Man to plan and organize the event. Members of the Ghanaian Association of San Diego helped prepare food and drinks for the event, including kenkey—a maize-based dish similar to tamales. Also playing a role was the Casa del Rey Moro Museum in Old Town, which provided some of the items used in a Museum display case featuring the culture of Ghana during the month of February.

Sponsors included Henry’s Marketplace and Walter Andersen Nursery.

The Tower After Hours programs run from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on the last Thursday of each month. The cost is $20 for general admission, $15 for Museum members and students. Admission is for ages 21 and over, and includes food, drink and entertainment.
