The Tower After Hours:
A Night in the Pacific Islands

Thursday, April 29, 2004

The diverse cultures of the Pacific Island regions of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia brought the evening of April 29 to life. Attendees were welcomed with shell-bead leis generously donated by Kiana Ka’ahanui—Health and Wealth Coach. Food and drink were provided by local restaurants—including Islander Grill, Yokozuna’s Sushi Bar and Islander Grill, and Ono’s Café—and featured the traditional Guamanian dish of chicken kelaguen, along with kahlua pork, red and white rice, and finadeni sauce, as well as tropical teas and smoothies. The Office of Chamorro Affairs also provided samples of kanden niyok (coconut candy), and demonstrated fresh coconut grating. The band Island Mix began the evening’s entertainment by performing various island ballads, and was accompanied by the lovely dancer Kona. This was followed by a series of traditional dance performances by the Nenehos Island Dancers and the UCSD Hawaii Club. Island Mix returned to energize Museum guests, again featuring a performance by Kona.

The San Diego Asian Film Festival, a collaborating partner, provided a copy of the film Skin Stories for visitors to watch (the movie was also available for viewing by general Museum visitors in the Museum’s Orientation Center for most of April). Other organizations such as the Pacific Islander Festival Association (also a collaborating partner), the Sons and Daughters of Guam Club, the San Diego Alliance for Asian Pacific Islander Americans, and the Pacific Islander Cancer Control Network were present with display tables to represent their organizations to those attending. A special thanks must be made to Marie Cruz of the Pacific Islander Festival Association, who, in addition to helping plan the event, loaned many of her personal items to the Museum for a display case featuring the cultures of the Pacific Islands during the month of April.

This event would not have been possible without the support of the following sponsors: San Diego National Bank—Southeastern Branch • Islander Grill • Yokozuna’s Sushi Bar and Islander Grill • Ono’s Cafe • Kiana Ka’ahanui—Health and Wealth Coach • The Office of Chamorro Affairs • Asia—The Journal of Culture & Commerce • Mendoza Realty • The Prado Restaurant at Balboa Park • Rosemarie & Ivan Harrison • Walter Andersen Nursery
