The Museum is now part of a program to achieve environmental sustainability and become Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified.
LEED Certifications provide “building owners and operators with a framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions,” according to the U.S. Green Building Council.
The Museum’s LEED certification will be part of a larger effort throughout Balboa Park leading up to the 2015 Balboa Park centennial commemoration. The Museum is working with the Balboa Park Cultural Partnership, SDG&E, and the San Diego Green Building Council.
Certification will likely include energy upgrades and improvements to the California Building, which houses the main museum, and the Gill Administration Building, which houses staff offices. LED lighting has already been installed to the museum store and lobby area, an energy audit has been completed on both buildingd, and other evaluations are planned.
