We’re honored to announce the Museum was recently awarded the 2018 Secretary’s Award for Excellence in Museum Sustainability by the California Association of Museums and the California Natural Resources Agency. This award, in particular, recognizes museums that have excelled in one of two areas: public programs or internal operations.

We received recognition for our “Every Action Matters” initiative, an internal program that focuses on employee engagement at every level of the organization and emphasizes major goals that are accomplished via small steps by individuals. Our staff developed the Energy Audit Team, which has made a great effort to make our historic institution more environmentally sustainable. Some of the steps taken are as simple as installing energy monitoring systems, turning off lights when they’re not in use, providing paper straws in the break room, and canceling water delivery services in favor of a new water filtration system. Additionally, 38% of our staff uses alternative forms of transportation to get to work, rather than driving a car.

Our “Every Action Matters” initiative is one of the many ways our team has furthered our commitment to sustainability after becoming the only LEED Gold-certified institution in Balboa Park in 2017. Our LEED Gold certification, which falls under the Existing Buildings: Operations + Maintenance rating system, encompasses three historic structures: the California Building, which houses our main museum galleries; the Irving J. Gill Administration Building, which houses staff offices; and the California Tower. To earn this Gold rating, we built upon energy efficient measures started in 2013, when the Museum became LEED Certified.

We’re fortunate to have a dedicated team that seeks to find new ways to conserve resources, including active participation and messaging by our Board of Trustees and our Chief Executive Officer, Micah Parzen. Thank you to the California Association of Museums and the California Natural Resources Agency for recognizing the efforts of the institution! We’ll continue to work to reduce our environmental impact.
